Successful Authors Also Do This...

It sounds weird to say, but at this point I am not only a professional writer, but also a professional reader. And that's true, I think, of all successful authors. They read in a way to absorb the information, not just take part in a passive activity. The art of writing and reading are two sides of the same literary coin. An adept author is usually an adept reader. But how do you read effectively? Let's explore.

1. Reading Widely and Deeply

The first step to reading effectively is to diversify your literary diet. Read across genres, styles, and authors. Read fiction and non-fiction, prose and poetry, contemporary and classical literature. This wide reading will expose you to various writing styles, narrative structures, and themes, which can all serve as inspiration for your own writing.

At the same time, don't just skim the surface. Dive deep into the text. Analyze the story structure, character development, themes, and subtext. How did the author craft that engaging dialogue? What techniques did they use to build tension? These insights can inform and improve your own writing.

2. Active Reading

When you read, engage with the text. This could mean taking notes, highlighting, or annotating as you read. Ask questions, make predictions, and challenge the author's ideas. This active reading approach allows you to better absorb and recall what you've read, and it also trains you to think critically about text, a crucial skill for any writer.

3. Reading as a Writer

Try to read with a writer's eye. Look at how the author has constructed the story. How do they begin and end chapters? How do they introduce characters? How do they describe settings? By observing these elements, you can gain valuable insights into the craft of writing.

4. Reflect and Review

After finishing a book, spend some time reflecting on it. What did you like about it? What didn't you like? What could have been done differently? By doing this, you not only consolidate your understanding of the book but also critically engage with its strengths and weaknesses, a practice that can inform your own writing.

5. Join a Book Club or Reading Group

A book club or reading group offers a platform to share interpretations, ideas, and critiques, which can deepen your understanding of a text. Hearing diverse perspectives can also broaden your own thinking and make you a more insightful reader and writer.

I hope these tips help you elevate your reading and, by extension, your writing. Remember, every book you read is a lesson in writing. So keep reading, keep learning, and keep writing!
