It's All About Choice

How are you all doing on this glorious day? Did you wake up early and ready to attack the day as we discussed in last week's sessions? Here's hoping your stories are brewing beautifully, and your characters are playing nice (or naughty, depending on your plot). Today, I'd like to turn our attention to a heavyweight champion of philosophy, a certain Aristotle.

Now, Aristotle was a smart cookie, right? And when he said, "Excellence is never an accident. It is always the result of high intention, sincere effort, and intelligent execution; it represents the wise choice of many alternatives - choice, not chance, determines your destiny," he was onto something that applies perfectly to our writing journeys.

Let's decode this wisdom-packed quote:

  1. High Intention: Aristotle is talking about aiming for the moon here, folks. When we set our intention high, to craft the best story we possibly can, we set the stage for excellence. So, aspiring authors, let's dream big and aim high!

  2. Sincere Effort: Every successful author will tell you that writing is more perspiration than inspiration. It's not just about the stroke of genius that hits you in the shower. It's about sitting down day after day, pouring your heart into your work, even when the muse is playing hard to get.

  3. Intelligent Execution: Here's where strategy comes into play. This might mean outlining your plot, doing in-depth character studies, or getting up an hour early to squeeze in some extra writing time. It’s about making smart choices that propel you towards your writing goals.

  4. Wise Choices: Ah, choices. Choosing the perfect word, the gripping plot twist, the character flaw that makes your protagonist human. Excellence in writing is a series of these choices. Remember, you are the architect of your story's destiny.

What Aristotle's wisdom boils down to is that excellence in our writing journey isn't a roll of the dice; it's a deliberate choice we make every day. So next time you're stuck in a plot hole or wrestling with writer's block, remind yourself - you have the power to choose your way towards excellence.
