Editing Day 3: This Is The Backbone Of Your Story

It's Day 3 of our Editing Journey. Yesterday we discussed characters and their motivations. Today's mission? The opposite side of that coin: tackling your novel's plot. Buckle up! I've always said that plot should be secondary to your story. Characters and their actions are primary to creating a story. The plot should revolve around the characters' actions, not the other way around. That said, readers want a cohesive story and a plot they can follow. So how do we do that?

The Plot Twist Plot is the backbone of your story. Is it coherent? Does it keep readers engaged? Are there plot holes that need filling?

Rhythm and Pace Does your story drag in places? Or, conversely, is it too rushed? During editing, make sure the pace of your story varies in a way that keeps readers invested.

Consistency Ensure the timeline of your story is consistent. Are events happening in a logical sequence? Do the characters age appropriately?

That's it for Day 3. Tomorrow, we'll focus on crafting enchanting settings.
